Advantages & Disadvantages to Dog Ownership

Slobbering Love: Dog Adoption Calls
Should I Answer?

Now – more than ever – I have wanted a puppy. Guess living on your own, 2,000 mi away from where you grew, up can do that to you. However, there is something about dogs that can cheer up any gloomy day. Maybe it’s that wag in their tail, the sloppy, slobbery smile or wet nose kisses. There is a reason for the penned name “Man’s Best Friend.” They are your friend through thick and thin and depend on you.

Recently I have been reading numerous articles on “The Benefits of Dog Ownership.” The writer’s present long lists on advantages to owning these happy creatures…yet, there are some disadvantages as well.

One writer notes, that caring for an animal can reduce your stress. She lays out some good points.

·         Pets Can Improve Your Mood
·         Pets Control Blood Pressure Better Than Drugs
·         Pets Encourage You To Get Out And Exercise
·         Pets Can Help With Social Support
·         Pets Stave Off Loneliness and Provide Unconditional Love
·         Pets Can Reduce Stress—Sometimes More Than People

Nevertheless, any good thing can have its downsides. It’s funny even before reading numerous pert articles; I created a pro-con list on my own. (Shows you that I am a list person!) It was surprising when all my cons were top cons on some pet advice websites.

·         Personal Sacrifices – Weekend Getaways
·         Budget Restraints – Vet, Boarding, Medicine
·         Training Process – Obedience School, Housebroken
·         Apartment Living _ No Yard
·         Demanding Job – A lot of Alone Time for Dog (9-6pm)

The thing is – I grew up with pets. I have always had an animal around me – sitting on my lap, following me around. Now, having a beta named Eli does not cut it. (Forgive me Eli!)

Reagan - my family's pound puppy for a time

I am a bold action kind of person. Yes, I think about a decision for a long time. But, once I make up my mind – that’s it. I’m sure a lot of people can testify to that. I don’t know what is keeping me from up and adopting a *little* dog. Maybe it’s hesitation that I would be unfair to the little one. However, if this internal phone keeps ringing, I might have to give in to my hesitant self and adopt a little furry bundle of joy!

Remembering Mrs. Brooke

Mrs. Brooke – a simple name – in a small frame. Nevertheless, this woman was larger than life.

The first thing I remember about Mrs. Brooke was her snappy personality. A middle school girl, perplexed by such a strong character, Mr. Miller would tell me, “Her bark is bigger than her bite.” However, I was not too sure about that at the time. Yet, after getting to know her and spending countless hours with her at cheerleading competitions and practices– I discovered this was the case.

She was a priceless geode – a rock on the exterior but, how she sparkled inside! The definition of a firecracker accurately describes this dynamic woman.  She was an explosive device that burned with colored flames. She was used to illuminate areas and send strong signals. Mrs. Brooke was a light for Christ. This is certain. She was a bright encouragement to all the students she touched. She made a lasting impact. I will never forget her smile, laugh and warm eyes. She had a way of reaching inside you and touching the core of your being. She truly affected the core of my heart.

She was the rarest of flowers – an exotic, sweet-smelling priceless rose! Roses are one of the most fascinating types of flowers. Stems covered in thorns that cut at initial touch, yet the rose is an ancient symbol of love and beauty. Mrs. Brooke comprised beauty in its truest form.  As 1 Peter 3:4 states, “it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” Though Mrs. Brooke was a courageous soul, she possessed a striking, gentle heart.

She was a Mama Bear. Maybe that’s why we called her ‘Mama B.’ She was a protector of her loved ones, God blessed her with a daring spirit and booming personality. Like Deborah, in the Bible, who was a judge and led God’s people to victory, Mrs. Brooke carried this charge on her life. Every day she held up a banner of strength. She blew the shofar and was on the frontline of God’s army. I picture this dainty woman, dressed in battle armor and carrying a flame in her fragile hands, she was a leader. She led others to the Promised Land of God’s mercy. Through her influence, she charged a multitude with her words and actions.

You will be missed, Mrs. Brooke. You have blessed my life in so many ways! You have made me a better, stronger person. From early morning cheer practices – where you encouraged us to dream big and reach for the stars to sitting in your office –laughing, praying and sharing stories with one another. Your smile lit dark places and your stamina encouraged all those around you. I thank you for your guidance, grace and beautiful influence. I will love you forever, Mama B!
